Q:
I found a new born kitten what animal shelter will take the kitten?
A:
Edgar, we always recommend leaving kittens alone for 24 hours to see if the momma cat comes back. Often she is out hunting for either food, water or another place to take her kitten. If the kitten(s) is still there after that with no visit from… more

Came here for the low cost/free vaccines. I have been to to other places before or even went to the Golden State Human Society which was first come first serve and too much of a wait. Here at the Upland animal shelter, I was able to get an appt. I came in filled out a quick form and then was directed immediately for assistance. I was in and out in less than 10 min. Making an appt was super easy, checking in for the appt was also quick. The vet tech was great and friendly and they were done in a couple of minutes. I really appreciated that the DHPP shot was free. They seem to put out monthly vaccine appt dates and also offer walk-in days. I would highly recommend for anyone to come here if you're looking to keep you pets UTD on their vaccines without breaking the bank. Everyone here was so friendly too and they have a little spot in the corner where they sell pet supplies for quite a bargain!

Why are you not open for adoptions? I'm here at 11:00 on a Wednesday. Parking lots full but we can't come in a look to adopt an animal? Beautiful, expensive facility. Seems wrong.

Doug, the shelter public hours are 12-5 PM every day. The hours are posted on the door. We do schedule appointments for meet-and-greets at 11:00 AM and 11:30 AM but that is if you've identified an animal you want to meet with. Otherwise, public walk-through times begin at noon after we are done cleaning the shelter. To see the animals at the shelter online, go to our website: www.friendsofuplandanimalshelter.org, click on "Adopt-a-dog" or "Adopt-a-cat" or "Adopt other". If you want to schedule an appointment with an animal, you can call the shelter at 909-931-4185 option 4 between 11 AM and 5 PM so the staff can check to see if that animal is available.

Deirdre, I'm sorry if you felt you were treated rudely. We do have a return policy for adopted animals of 7 days. After that, we take in owner surrendered pets on a case-by-case basis. Our first consideration is space and unfortunately right now we are still dealing with "kitten season" where the majority of our kennels are currently full and we still have approximately 60 cats/kittens out to foster but aging up quickly. We just don't have the space to take in owner surrendered cats at this time. We always recommend to people to check with family, friends, neighbors and coworkers first to rehome their pets. Another option is utilizing the Adoptapet.com site using their "rehome" feature. You can also contact rescues, specifically cat rescues, to see if they have space. Rescues, as opposed to shelters that have to accept stray animals, can choose the animals they take in.

Honestly surprised to see such horrible reviews for this shelter, since we had such an incredible experience! My husband and I were looking to adopt a dog and had several bad experiences when reaching out to other shelters both nearby and far. We stumbled across Upland Animal shelter and took a risk - jumped in the car to make the drive from Santa Barbara with no appointment, and no high hopes.
We were pleasantly surprised as the adoption team was SO kind and immediately let us walk-in to view the pup we had our eyes on. The facility was clean, large, and a lot different from the other shelters we had visited. The volunteers were super helpful and even let us browse the other pups, just to see if we were interested in any other dogs. We were also able to do a meet and greet on the spot, and right away, we knew our pup was the one! After talking to the volunteers (we later learned was the interview process), filling out some paperwork, we were able to take our pup home the same day.
Even after coming home, Upland Animal Shelter was incredibly helpful with our additional questions, and they even gave us a ton of coupons and guides on how to navigate a new puppy. Thank you Upland Animal Shelter, we are so happy to have little Kona in our lives!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Julie B.Upland, CA07Aug 15, 2023
Anytime I've contacted the Upland Animal Shelter I have been treated very professionally. They do everything they can to make every baby feel special! We have gone to them for our lost pets, loose animals to turn in and visits to the vet. They've all been terrific!

The shelter was closed. Despite the signs saying they were open. Try another shelter don't waste your time.

Our public hours are 12 noon to 3:00 PM daily. Unfortunately, the automatic opening feature of the front doors of the shelter is broken. Due to the heat, we keep the doors closed but open them when someone comes to the front. Occasionally the staff might not be at the front desk for a short period of time, but we ask that people wait a couple of minutes and someone will let them in. We have submitted a work order for the doors, but this is a city owned building and we must wait for them to be able to fix it.

the owner named Kathy is totally rude. I asked her if the kittens were not sick and she yelled at me over the phone. DO NOT FOSTER FROM THIS SHELTER! she called me anxious when I was just simply asking if the kittens weren't sick and she said that I'm not good for the foster job and that I shouldn't foster at all. she doesn't deserve your help to foster so I recommend going somewhere else to foster where they will appreciate the help.

Sarah, I'm sorry if you feel you had a bad experience with Kathy. I would like to put a few things into context for you. First, Kathy is a volunteer board member, not the owner of the organization. In addition to her many regular board duties, in the last year she has taken on the primary responsibility of the foster coordinator position. To add to that stress during a difficult "kitten season", what she wouldn't tell you is how tired she was when she spoke to you because she is personally caring for 5 newborn kittens. That means bottle feeding every 2 hours...times 5! I would hope you could have a little compassion for someone working so hard to save these little lives. In your original email and in your foster application, you made it a point to say you didn't want to deal with sick kittens. We can certainly understand that, but as Kathy explained to you in writing and on the phone, while we take every precaution to ensure healthy animals, we cannot guarantee that. Nobody could. Here is exactly what she wrote you as an email response:
Thank you for applying to foster for Friends. Before kittens are sent to foster we do give them flea treatment, and we do put them under a Wood Lamp to scan for ringworm. They are also dewormed. Sometimes dead worms will show up in the litter box. Depending on how long you foster, they may need to come in for a second deworming.
Some of our fosters will give their kittens a Dawn soap bath when they get home. That is acceptable if you'd like the extra assurance that they are free of fleas.
Ringworm is a little trickier. Kittens may test negative for ringworm, but if it's in an early stage, it may not break until days later. This is not a common occurrence but it does happen and I'm sorry it happened to you when you previously fostered.
Fostering is not an easy job. We rely on our fosters to help us ensure healthy kittens. We never intentionally send sick kittens out to foster. But, being transitioned from the outside world to shelter to foster can be stressful for a kitten and they will often develop an illness that needs to be treated.
We ask our fosters to be conscientious with daily handling and weighing, conscious of what is showing up in the litter box, and observant of behaviors that need to be addressed. The sooner we are aware of an issue, the easier it is to be treated. Foster families are critical in helping the shelter detect these issues in the early stages.
Sarah, I'm sending you the Foster agreement and Foster Guidelines. Please read and keep for reference. Please let me know if you are still willing to foster now that you've been given this additional information.
I am also sending you the link to Hannah Shaw's (The Kitten Lady) series of videos on raising kittens. Each video is only about 10 minutes long and there's a LOT of good information there. I hope you will watch them. https://www.kittenlady.org/videos
I hope this additional information makes it clear to everyone that we take the care of our animals, especially our most vulnerable, very seriously. We absolutely need more people that are willing and able to foster. It takes a village to care for the hundreds of animals that come into the shelter on a monthly basis. We provide all the supplies, training and support. You provide the loving, caring home environment to help these little ones grow and flourish so they can be adopted into loving homes. - Amber K.Rancho Cucamonga, CA1122Dec 21, 2022
I love this shelter! I got my cat here about a year ago. I had a great experience. I live closer to the Rancho shelter but I like to go here.

This was our 5th and last shelter of the day, we were VERY impressed at how clean this one was. They even have classical music playing in one of the kennel bays.
We saw a dog we liked, did a meet and greet then went home to discuss. The volunteer that took him out for us was very friendly. Went back a few hours later to do another meet and greet.... the second volunteer was also amazing and knowledgeable. They even walked the dog thru other kennels to see how he would react to other dogs.
We agreed that we would rescue the cutie, paperwork was fast and easy. The front desk was super helpful giving us all the info we needed for picking him up after being neutered to all the info in the adoption folder. We even got some treats and toys for our lil guy to come home to.
He's been home for almost 24 hours and he is such a sweetie. We are so happy to give this guy his furever home!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
